In 1800, St. Madeleine Sophie Barat founded the Society of the Sacred Heart in France. Her purpose was to make known God's love, and her vision continues today in Sacred Heart schools.
Her vision is articulated in the Goals and Criteria of 2005. Sacred Heart schools educate all members of the school community to a personal and active faith in God, a strong intellectual life, a social awareness that impels to action, the building of community as a Cristian value and foundation for their lives that is based on a personal freedom that enables all to have such self-esteem and confidence that they can be builders of community wherever they are.
There are currently 24 member schools in the Network of Sacred Heart Schools in the United States and Canada. Over 2,000 faculty educate 12,000 students, boys and girls, from early childhood to twelfth grade.
The Network was born of the belief that unity brings vitality and strength. A collected presence creates energy and a dynamism that is unable to be achieved separately. Independent but never isolated, every Sacred Heart school needs to feel the strength of belonging to a larger whole, of sharing principles and values, broad purposes, of hopes and ambitions. (Goals and Criteria, 1975)
The Network provides a means for mutual support and development among its schools through the sharing of spiritual and intellectual resources as well as others to further the mission of Sacred Heart schools. Member schools have many opportunities for collaboration. Students, faculty, staff, administrators and trustees participate in national Network workshops, conferences and programs.
The Network of Sacred Heart Schools is a nonprofit corporation and is governed by an executive committee that includes the provincial of the Society of the Sacred Heart, United States - Canada, the Director of Network Program Planning and the Head of the Conference of Sacred Heart Education. The members of the executive committee are present or former heads of school and present or former trustees of Network schools. The national office is in Washington, DC.
